Impophomo Rushing Waters’ (Impophomo) ECD programme aims to enhance the accessibility of exceptional early childhood education and school readiness for children aged 0-6 years from predominantly disadvantaged communities. The renovation of Jozi Jammers Nursery School aligns with this goal, ensuring the provision of a safe, quality, and creative learning environment. This refurbishment will uphold the school’s excellence in preparing children for primary school and equipping them with essential life skills. The upgrade will also meet the standards prescribed by the South African Department of Basic Education (DBE) for Early Childhood Facilities.
Over the last five years, we have supported numerous preschools, including:
Additionally, our ECD programme includes community engagement outreach initiatives to build awareness and support within the community, our annual Christmas initiative being one of the most anticipated and joyful.
This year, our flagship ECD project is the urgent upgrade of Jozi Jammers Nursery School, located in Northriding. This amazing nursery school has been a cornerstone of early childhood education in the community since 2008, offering outstanding education and holistic development to children aged 12 months – 6 years. Jozi Jammers serves a diverse community, with 90% of learners coming from historically disadvantaged backgrounds, and a current enrolment of 65 children. The school’s dedication to nurturing young minds and fostering a supportive community environment aligns perfectly with Impophomo’s mission.
Over the years, the dedicated Jozi Jammers team have positively impacted thousands of young lives. The preschool has received countless heartfelt letters and messages of gratitude from parents who appreciate the love and care their children receive at Jozi Jammers. Many of the graduates have gone on to become prefects, leaders, head-boys/girls, and have excelled academically, and on the sports field, whilst becoming compassionate and confident human beings in the schools they have progressed to.
Unfortunately, the school’s facilities have significantly deteriorated, and the building is now dilapidated and requires substantial upgrades. The roof, which is over 20 years old, leaks during the rainy season, causing frequent flooding and disruptions. Additionally, the kitchen area floods, the exterior walls have cracks, and the overall layout of the school needs restructuring for much improved learning environment that is safe and conducive to excellence. The proposed refurbishment and upgrade project will address the structural improvements, upgrade educational spaces enhancing the ECD mission and impact of the school in the Northriding community.
The total estimated cost for the refurbishment of Jozi Jammers is R2,700,000 (2.7 million Rand). Our hope is to complete the upgrades as soon as possible to prevent further structural deterioration and ensure the safety, comfort, and uninterrupted learning of the students. With the advent of the fast approaching rainy season, this refurbishment is more urgent than ever before.
